I'm also going to do a little bit of a minute-by-minute of my thoughts on the video and what it's saying/suggesting. Just for kicks.
Here's the video -
Minute-by-minute -
0:16 "As the days go by, the foreign population in Korea is increasing." This arrives on our screen after 15 seconds of promotional snippets of high voiced foreigners proclaiming their immense ability to snag some local tail, a woman in a wheelchair complaining about a foriegner making her pregnant and running away, and a person with a coffee cup but no head telling us that someone had HIV...so we know that this won't be a story about the good things that foreigners have contributed to Korean society. Also...when they say that the foreign population is increasing...they are trying the old xenophobic fear trap...but...for the rest of the story they talk about Americans. Is the American population in Korea REALLY growing? I mean...really?
0:18 "It causes an inconvenient truth as Korean women try to hang out with foreigners in Korea." Inconvenient? Who is inconvenienced here? Why can't people hang out with whoever they like? Don't Korean men try to hang out with foreigners in Korea as well? Is that inconvenient? Park Ji-Sung seems to spend most of his time with foreigners. So does that Moon fella over at the U.N. Kim Yuna spent a lot of time with that Canadian bloke before she won a gold medal for Korea...convenient.
0:23 "The Shocking Reality About Relationships with Foreigners." Well...do buckle yourselves in Burnfans...because it's gonna be a bumpy road...and it is shocking. Is it reality? Well...let's admit that reality is subjective...and then immediately declare that there's as much truth in this report as there is healthy food in the Obese Aisle at your local supermarket.
0:30 Screen shots of various internet chat rooms and tweets...and a comment about a foreign participant on a show called "Superstar Korea" and his being up on fraud charges, and being 'involved with many Korean women'. Of course...Koreans never use their fame in ways that are less than lawful or decent. I mean...Ko Young Wook admitted to having intercouse with a girl who was under-aged having gotten her drunk in his apartment...and there are three other young girls who have made similar claims...but he's Korean isn't he? So that's O.K. Importantly, the fella from the Superstar show has NOT been found guilty of anything at this stage (there wasn't enough evidence to charge Ko Young Wook...but the fact that he admitted to sleeping with underaged girls is reprehensible at best (and the fact that he has yet to be charged with statutory rape is extraordinary)) and to use this one case as the basis for a 'magazine style' current affairs piece is utter nonsense.
0:36 "The morals of foreigners living in Korea has become a social issue." The morals of foreigners? Morals? This is an issue of morals? Sleeping with underaged girls, having your teeth removed to avoid the draft, the sexual abuse and exploitation of young actresses and singers, judges at international beauty paegeants asking contestants for sexual favours, and former professional athletes stealing cars and attempting to kidnap a woman aren't moral issues. No. None of these issues (taken from my memory of shit that happened over the last four years) are related to the 'morals' of the individuals. Oh no! This isn't to say that 'foreigners' (which in this video just means 'Americans'...but they use the word 'foreigners' because is makes the 'issue' seem bigger) in Korea, or in other countries don't commit crimes. It's just that in Australia (for example) we don't have bullshit current affairs stories about AIDS riddled foreigners and their dirty morals...and that's surprising when you think about how racist the Australian media can be, and how shit current affairs programs in Australia are.
0:38 "We went to a place where we can meet foreigners easily. In that place, we can find couples who look like foreign men and Korean women walking all over the streets with daring intimacy." A place where you can meet foreigners easily? What? Like an English Hagwon? You went to a place where you can meet the types of foreigners that you need for this story. Like in the above paragraph. I knew what I was looking for...and I found it. Muck raking is easy...especially when you're just showing poorly lit shots of people walking with their arms around each other. Now...it might be a translation issue...but 'daring intimacy'? Daring? What are they daring? The ire of the Korean people? Public condemnation? Netizens? Korean couples walk arm in arm all the time. This week, in Australia, I saw a Korean couple on the tram, where the woman was sitting on her boyfriend's knee...on a TRAM! This move took up four seats on a crowded tram. That's daring intimacy.
0:48 "We went to a club that is popular for many Korean women. We can see many couples who are physically affectionate there, making onlookers uncomfortable. This is like the compromising physical intimacy as seen in films." A club that is popular for Korean women? Really? The clubs that I visited in Korea had many Koreans of BOTH gender dancing and hanging about. That's because they were in Korea. It's not a shock. Couples are often physically affectionate in clubs...regardless of their race. That's kind of a big part of why clubs exist. Isn't it? I mean...I'm a silly old fuckwit...so I rarely go to such places...but I thought there was a certain amount of kissy kiss that went on inside such places. Isn't there? What the fuck do I know. The day before I came home i went for a walk along President Lee's liitle stream in Seoul...after dark...and I assure you fruitcakes that there was a LOT of non-foreigner related making out going on. No onlookers though...which I think is the problem. Nightspots shouldn't really have onlookers. Onlookers in nightclubs are generally creepy dudes who can't find something else to do. Onlookers can go and get fucked.
1:04 "It seems natural for them to have physical contact." The inference is that it shouldn't seem natural for a Korean woman to have physical contact with a foreigner. It should seem horrible, abhorrant, and beneath the Korean girl. It's difficult to know from the blurry images of couples sitting near each other, what the narrator is getting at...but that's not the point is it?
1:05 "Do you think that their relationship is based upon trust or just curiosity?" I don't know. Without seeing anything other than fuzzy shapes sitting around talking...it's difficult to know what their relationships are based on. Fucking? Love? Mutual respect? Golden showers? Who the fuck knows? Why not ASK THEM? Why not ask one of the couples about what their relationship is based on? I mean...they're probably going to know more than we are aren't they?
1:09 We are now introduced to what appears to be a talking penis. The penis says " “If I say "I'm an American", I have no trouble with trying to meet women in Korea." Note the penis' use of the word trying. I have no trouble trying to fly. Actually flying is another issue entirely.
1:14 Then we cut to a man with no head telling a boring story to yet another penis. His story is basically about him having a one night stand and the girl texting and calling him a lot. This is apparently news. This is the sort of thing that should hold the nation's attention for a minute or two. Man sleeps with lady...lady texts man a lot...man is baffled. News doesn't get any less valid than this.
1:38 A shot of what (oddly) appears to be a blurry Korean couple being moderately chatty outside and the narrator comes back to shout condescendingly "What makes Korean women open their mind so easily to foreign men?" Now...we've actually had exactly ZERO evidence of Korean anyone opening their mind easily to foreign anyone...so this revelation seems startling...but wait...we have someone with a face and a name...and he's going to explain EVERYTHING!
1:45 Junsung Park (Professor of Psychological Rehabilitation, at Korea Nazarene University): In comparison to dating Korean men , there are fewer opportunities to date foreign men. So, it is important for Korean women to develop a relationship with foreign men rapidly. Yeah...a professor in "Psychological Rehabilitation" at a university that you're NEVER heard of (interestingly a Christian University that was founded by American ministries)is the expert that they've chosen to discuss this issue. Yep. No SKY School lecturers on sociology or psychology or...well...anything moderately relevant. Lucky he isn't a professor or mathematics...because...there are actually...globally...many, many, many more foreign men in the world than there are Korean men. Many more. Therefore...there are actually many MORE chances for Korean women to meet with foreign men...especially if they aren't narrow minded...and are prepared to purchase a ticket on an aeroplane somewhere else.
1:58 You may well be totally shocked...but the first two minutes were actually the best bits. I shit you not. As we move through the second half of the video...you're going to find yourself thinking of the first two minutes as being 'the good old days'. We may even reminisce about them one day. This becomes especially clear as we are shown a Korean woman waiting for a taxi...a foreign man approacehes her...and in short time...he has his arm around her!!! See? SEEEEE? It took four seconds for that scoundrel to trick that mindless heathen into loving him! Or...and this is worth considering as it seems more likely to be true...the fella might be her boyfriend. Who knows? Again...if you don't ask...how the fuck are you supposed to know what's going on?
Now...the directors decide that a couple of the world's great fuckwits will now become the spokesmen for ALL FOREIGN MEN.
2:17 "What do foreign men think of Korean women?" I'm gonna paraphrase here...but some white dude with a blurry head says that Korean women are beautiful and he's open minded but so far hasn't been able to find a Korean girl who will have sex with him (which flies directly in the face of the earlier claims that Korean women are just wandering about looking for taxis in the hope that a white man might start kissing them within two minutes)...and then he explains that he will 'get one' later. Please. I mean...I could easily find some drunk horny dude and ask him loaded questions...and get him to say any stupid shit you like. For goodness sakes.
2:34 We then hear from a blurry Korean woman in a park. She explains that relationships between Koreans and foreigners can't last...because Korean women want to learn English...and foreign men are all rampant sex fiends. This is science people!
2:45 "Moreover, some Korean women who are interested in foreign men are trying to date with foreign men frequently. For this type of women, some foreign men make bad comments about Korean women. Therefore, other innocent Korean women suffer a lot from that. The problem is there is no place to appeal to for these women who are victims of foreigners." (subtitle - Korean women are like a fast food) This is a bit fuzzy...but I think they are saying that if a woman dates a lot of men...then men say bad things about women...and wll women suffer. I think. This is a very tricky area really. I mean...who wants to hear a white man's thoughts on this sort of thing? Nobody. So...I'm just going to let you come to your own conclusion.
Done?
Yeah...that's what I was gonna say anyway.
3:06 "(subtitle - Women being sexually assaulted by foreigners are increasing.)That's along quote...and one of the worst parts of the whole story. If these women really are the victims of sexual assault...being cold called and recorded and broadcast on television is NOT in any way appropriate. It's fucked up. There's no evidence that the reporter called anyone who was a 'victim of foreigners'. None at all. Certainly the fact that these three women didn't want to talk about it, or, in the case of two of the women...seemed to have no idea what the reporter was talking about...does nothing to validate the story.
One reporter was trying to contact these victims of foreigners.
Victim 1: hello?
Reporter: hi, I am calling from MBC ‘세상보기 시시각각’ production team.
Victim 1: What's your business?
Reporter: We called because we heard you were the victim of a foreigner.
Victim 1: I have nothing to say about that.
Victim 2: I don't know what you're talking about.
Victim 3: That’s not true."
3:31 We are now introduced to a woman who appears to be in a wheelchair. Her foreigner left her when he found out she was pregnant. Foreign boyfriends are terrible. Take this guy...who killed his girlfriend when she tried to leave him...thank goodness he became a naturalised U.S citizen after he left Korea in 2009...otherwise one might think that a Korean had committed such a heinous act! Damn Yankees! Thank the Lord that Koreans never go to other countries...get women pregnant and then run away...imagine if such a thing happened? Impossible to imagine isn't it? Well...one might look at the plight of women in the Philippines, where Korean men regularly visit, impregnate their girlfriends...and then run back to Korea. Now...two wrongs don't make a right...but at the same time...people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. You know what I mean?
3:49 We're nearing the end...so it's time for the testimony of a coffee cup and its animated friend. The cup talks about a foreigner who swindled a Korean woman out of her rent money. 3,000,000 Won apparently. Sounds like a very nice apartment. So...foreigners just want money. All of us. I keep hoping that The Bird might get a job soon...so she can earn money for me to steal. Bwahahaha! It's a long game...especially because the first month living here has severely depleted my savings...and on paper The Bird owes me 2,650,000 Won at the moment. But that's all part of my cunning foreigner plan! Bwahahahah!
3:56 The coffee cup announces its lack of surprise at this money trouble...leaps in the air...and then discusses another chat that it had with a (real and not imaginary) person. The coffee cup's friend had AIDS. After a relationship with a foreigner. Now...this is where things get weird. More than ninety percent of people with AIDS in Korea are men...which means that the female population with AIDS is extremely low. So if such a large number of Korean women are sleeping with foreign men...and these foreign men are all full of the AIDS...then why are women less then ten percent of the total number of AIDS patients in Korea? Where are these men getting their AIDS from? The small number of women who sleep with foreigners? Foreign women? Each other? I don't know. But I think that the subject requires a little more serious discussion and thought than this show offers it....don't you? Of course you do!
4:22 The man with the face, the American founded University and the words of fear has returned. "The foreign population in Korea will be increasing now and forever. Because of this growth, I think we should think critically about foreigners and keep thinking about this problem. Korean society should consider this problem too." He says...and then he says "boo" and turns off the lights whilst shining a torch on his face. Ghoulish stuff! Very scary! I can't sleep!!! Sorry. Now, I'm not entirely sure what the 'problem' he's talking about is...but one can only assume that he means the problem of xenophobia and poorly researched half facts. If so...I agree! If not (and we all know that 'if not' is probably where the ball's going to land) then he must mean...the problem of...foreigners?
The video is about to end...but not before the creepy narrator delivers one last piece of rubbishy nonsense that makes no sense - "There are only a few uncomfortable cultures of affection that cause problems in Korea. It is now time that we formed proper and wholesome relationships with the opposite sex." How the fuck this relates to the utter bucket of horse shit that we've just watched is beyond me...and I imagine that it's beyond some of you as well.
So...we reach the end of the video...and what did we learn? Nothing really. Just remember that if you're living in Korea...some people still have these petty values...but most people that I met in Korea were much more open minded and warm hearted than the people who made this mess. Don't be cold or judgemental...being open and friendly with ALL Koreans is the best way to fight this shit. Success is the best revenge.
Having said that...email MBC...protest MBC....get angry at MBC...or just generally take your rage to MBC. They are to blame...NOT Korea...and NOT Koreans.
Have a lovely weekend Burnfans!
Oh...and I got my subs from this site here.
Cheers.
